Fresno, Calif. – In a groundbreaking move, former Chief Assistant City Attorney Raj Singh Badhesha will take his place as a Fresno County Superior Court judge starting July 15.

Raj Singh Badhesha's appointment marks a significant achievement for the 300,000-strong Sikh community in the United States, offering representation both locally and nationally in Fresno.

“I thank all of you for your roles in my growth as an individual, as an attorney, and my ascent to the bench,” Badhesha expressed in gratitude.

Key Details:

  • First Sikh on Fresno Bench: Badhesha's appointment is a historic first.
  • Journey of Two Decades: From aspiring lawyer to a Superior Court judge.
  • City Hall to Bench: First such appointment in Fresno in over four decades.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “To see somebody from the Sikh community be elevated to the bench, the first one in Fresno county, it’s a historic moment, it’s momentous, but Raj got appointed not because he’s Sikh, but because of his qualities.”

Badhesha’s appointment is a symbol of progress for the Sikh community, inspiring future generations. “You will see his name in the history books, his name will be written in history books, and he is going to be an inspiration for our future,” said Fresno resident Gurminder Sangha.

On a national level, Badhesha’s new role is equally significant. He hopes to inspire Sikh youth to pursue any position they desire, reflecting his own journey to the bench.

In a display of his faith, Badhesha will also wear a traditional kirpan, a curved, single-edged blade, which is an article of faith in the Sikh religion.

Badhesha's historic appointment to the Fresno County Superior Court is a testament to perseverance and representation, marking a significant milestone for the Sikh community in the US. This inspiring moment underscores the importance of diversity and inclusion, paving the way for future generations.
