Atlanta, GAIn a tragic incident, 22-year-old Indian-American Georgia Tech student Akash Banerjee was fatally shot in the head on May 18, 2025, at The Connector Apartments, an off-campus housing complex in Midtown Atlanta.

In response, the apartment management has implemented stricter security measures, including mandatory guest sign-ins with full names and a 10 p.m. curfew for common areas.

The broader community, especially international students and the Indian-American diaspora, is grappling with the implications of this targeted violence.

 

The incident underscores the need for enhanced safety protocols in student housing and has prompted discussions about the vulnerabilities faced by international students in the U.S.

Banerjee, who was raised in Atlanta, had recently re-enrolled at Georgia Tech after overcoming personal challenges, including substance abuse issues.

He was working diligently to rebuild his life and academic career.

 

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our students," Georgia Tech Institute Communications stated. "This loss is felt across our community, and our hearts go out to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones."
