San Jose, California: In a remarkable blend of personal history and storytelling, 10-year-old Ameya Desai from San Jose has clinched first place in NPR's Student Podcast Challenge for her poignant podcast, "Far From Home: A Story of Forced Migration."

The podcast delves into her grandfather's expulsion from Uganda in the 1970s, shedding light on a chapter of history that resonates with many in the Indian diaspora.

Key Facts:

  • Ameya's podcast won first place in NPR's Student Podcast Challenge in August 2024.

  • The story centers on her grandfather's forced migration from Uganda under Idi Amin's regime.

  • Ameya previously won the San Jose Writing Contest in 2023 for a related story.

Ameya's journey into storytelling began with a simple request to her father during school drop-offs: "Daddy, you owe me a story."

This love for narratives blossomed into a deeper exploration of her family's past, culminating in a podcast that not only recounts her grandfather's experiences but also connects them to broader themes of displacement and resilience.

In her podcast, Ameya interviews her grandfather, Kishor Desai, who was born in Uganda to Indian parents.

He shares vivid memories of his childhood near sugarcane fields and the abrupt upheaval when Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of Asians in 1972.

"My family was dispersed all over the world. We were never a single family unit again," he recalls.

The podcast has struck a chord with listeners, especially within the Indian American community, highlighting the importance of preserving and sharing personal histories.

Ameya's storytelling not only honors her family's legacy but also serves as a bridge connecting generations and cultures.

"My friends and I want to be that generation that keeps talking about the stories of displacement, like my grandfather's, that don't get told often enough," Ameya says in her podcast.

Ameya's achievement underscores the power of storytelling in understanding and empathizing with the experiences of others.

Her podcast serves as an inspiration for young voices to explore and share their heritage, fostering a deeper connection to their roots and the world around them.
