Washington, D.C.: In a move that could make history, U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat from Illinois on May 7, 2025.

If elected, he would become the first Indian American to serve in the U.S. Senate, marking a significant milestone for South Asian representation in American politics.

He stated, "I spent my life standing up to bullies," referencing his opposition to former President Donald Trump. 

The race for Illinois' Senate seat is shaping up to be competitive, with several candidates vying for the position.

Krishnamoorthi's substantial fundraising and political experience position him as a formidable candidate in the upcoming election.

Born in New Delhi, India, Krishnamoorthi moved to the United States at a young age and was raised in Peoria, Illinois.

He has represented Illinois' 8th Congressional District since 2017 and serves as the top Democrat on the House China Committee.
