Netflix's 'Adolescence' to Be Screened in UK Secondary Schools to Address Online Harms

London, UK—The British government has endorsed an initiative to screen the Netflix series Adolescence in secondary schools across the United Kingdom. This move aims to facilitate discussions among students, parents, and educators about the dangers of toxic online content and its impact on teenagers.

  • Series Overview: Adolescence is a four-episode British crime drama that follows the story of a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a female classmate. The series delves into issues such as knife crime, toxic masculinity, and the influence of harmful online content on youth. 

  • Government Support: Prime Minister Keir Starmer has publicly supported the initiative, acknowledging the series' role in highlighting complex issues affecting young people today. He described the show as "really hard to watch" but emphasized its importance in shedding light on critical topics.

  • Educational Resources: Netflix, in collaboration with educational organizations, will provide guides and resources to assist teachers, parents, and caregivers in navigating the conversations prompted by the series.

The decision to incorporate Adolescence into the school curriculum follows a roundtable discussion at Downing Street, attended by Prime Minister Starmer, series co-creator Jack Thorne, producers Emily Feller and Jo Johnson, and representatives from charities such as Tender, the NSPCC, and The Children’s Society.

Prime Minister Starmer highlighted the series' effectiveness in portraying real-life scenarios that could happen to any child, emphasizing the need for awareness and proactive discussions in educational settings. 

Adolescence has garnered significant attention since its premiere on March 13, 2025, becoming the first streaming show to top TV ratings in the UK, surpassing popular BBC programs. The first episode attracted 6.45 million viewers in its first week.
