Bay Area, California: Naatak, a prominent Indian-American theater group, brought the critically acclaimed Marathi play Ghasiram Kotwal to the Bay Area, delighting audiences with its unique blend of history, satire, and powerful storytelling. Originally penned by Vijay Tendulkar in 1972, the play is celebrated for its bold themes and innovative structure.
Set in 18th-century Pune during the Peshwa era, Ghasiram Kotwal explores the dynamics of power, corruption, and morality. It follows the story of Ghasiram, a man who rises to power as the Kotwal (chief of police) under the cunning Nana Phadnavis, only to face the consequences of his ruthlessness.
Through biting satire and stylized choreography, the play critiques authoritarianism and the manipulative nature of politics, drawing parallels to contemporary issues.
Vijay Tendulkar, one of India’s most celebrated playwrights and screenwriters, is renowned for his thought-provoking works addressing societal injustices. Known for tackling controversial subjects, Tendulkar’s plays, such as Sakharam Binder and Silence! The Court is in Session and has left an indelible mark on Indian theatre.
His work reflects a deep understanding of human behavior and an unflinching willingness to challenge societal norms.
“This staging of Ghasiram Kotwal offers a chance to experience a masterpiece that remains as relevant today as it was in the 1970s,” remarked a spokesperson for Naatak.
By reviving Ghasiram Kotwal, Naatak not only brought Vijay Tendulkar’s genius to a global audience but also underscored the timeless relevance of his themes. Events like this strengthen the cultural fabric of the Indian diaspora and inspire reflection on universal issues of power and morality.
