Manmohan Singh Memorial in NJ: Honoring a Visionary Leader

New Jersey, USA: A heartfelt tribute to India's former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, was held on January 11, 2025, at the Royal Albert’s Palace in New Jersey. 

Organized by the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) New Jersey Chapter and the Indo-American Cultural Society USA, the event honored Singh's transformative contributions to India's economy and global stature. 

Over 500 attendees, including political leaders, community members, and officials, gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of this economic reformer.

Key Facts:

  • The event featured prominent IOC leaders from the US and India and included a special video tribute by IOC Global President Sam Pitroda.

 

  • Former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey praised Singh as a “Gentle Giant,” recalling his crucial role in India's economic reforms starting in 1991.

 

  • Tributes highlighted Singh's foundational work in South-South cooperation and his efforts to stabilize India's economy while improving millions of lives.

Speakers at the event reflected on Singh's enduring impact on India's economic landscape. 

Former New Jersey Governor McGreevey noted Singh's pivotal 1991 budget, which opened India's economy to global markets. 

He praised Singh’s foresight in positioning India as a global economic powerhouse, stating, “He understood the fundamental importance of economic reforms.”

Viru Patel, a Council Member from Woodbridge Township, credited Singh with pioneering South-South cooperation among nations such as Brazil, Russia, and China. 

Singh's leadership in eliminating the License Raj and combating corruption was also recognized as a turning point in India's development.

The memorial service began with prayers and included video clips of Singh's interviews with famous Indian journalists. 

The gathering ended with the singing of India’s national anthem and a call to honor Singh’s legacy through commitment to progress and collaboration.
