Atlanta, GA: On October 22, 2024, Ashwin Ramaswami, Democratic candidate for Georgia’s State Senate District 48, held a press conference in Atlanta to condemn a series of racist attack ads launched by his opponent, Republican incumbent Shawn Still.

Ramaswami described the ads as “deeply harmful” and accused Still of using false claims and fear-mongering tactics, which have resulted in death threats against his family.

Key Facts:

  • Ramaswami accused Still of darkening his skin in mailers and instructing citizens to call the police if they saw him.

  • The attack ads falsely claimed that Ramaswami solicited children and impersonated the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.

  • The ads have led to death threats, prompting Ramaswami to report the incidents to law enforcement.

The press conference drew support from Indian American leaders and local organizations, including Desis for Democracy and the Indian American Impact Fund, who decried the racially charged nature of the ads.

Ramaswami emphasized that these tactics undermine civil discourse, stating, “Politics should never involve such tactics.”

He also noted that his opponent had refused to disavow the ads, adding that this refusal spoke volumes about the campaign’s ethics.

Ramaswami also accused Still of hiring a private investigator to spy on his campaign, calling it an “unethical” move designed to undermine transparency.

Despite the negative attacks, Ramaswami reaffirmed his commitment to focusing on key issues such as healthcare, education, and gun violence, urging the public to reject fear-based politics.

“This isn’t just about me—it’s about the kind of state we want to live in,” Ramaswami stated. He also called for legislative measures to prevent similar smear campaigns in future elections, advocating for greater transparency in political advertising.

Ashwin Ramaswami’s firm stand against the racist attack ads in the Georgia Senate race highlights the challenges of maintaining integrity in modern political campaigns.

By denouncing these tactics, Ramaswami emphasizes the need for respectful discourse focused on real issues like healthcare and education.

His call for accountability and transparency not only resonates with his supporters but also underscores the broader fight against fear-based politics in Georgia.
