Harris County, Texas – Harris County made history by officially approving the sale of fireworks for Diwali celebrations last week, becoming the first in the region to recognize the holiday in this way.
Diwali, observed by over a billion people globally, symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness. The approval follows the 2023 state legislation (SB 275) permitting counties to include Diwali as a fireworks-eligible holiday. Fireworks sales will be allowed from October 25 until midnight on November 1.
The Harris County Commissioners Court passed the motion in a 4-0 vote despite safety concerns from some local officials.
Residents like Karan Sri Rama, who has lived in Harris County for 36 years, expressed strong support, describing the decision as crucial for authentic celebrations.
“Can you imagine Christmas without a Christmas tree?” he asked. “That’s what we have been feeling for the last 36 years.”
Though some fire officials raised concerns over firework-related injuries, proponents argued that Diwali fireworks are safer compared to those used during July 4th celebrations.
Commissioner Lesley Briones emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, "I’m proud that we’re the most diverse, but to me, that’s not enough. We need to be the most inclusive and the most respectful.
This approval not only celebrates Harris County's diversity but also sets a precedent for other counties to support cultural heritage through inclusive policy-making.
