From Dean to Provost: Kavita Bala to Spearhead Cornell’s Future Initiatives

ITHACA, NY: Kavita Bala, dean of Cornell University’s Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science (Cornell Bowers CIS), has been appointed as the university’s 17th provost. 

Her five-year appointment, approved by the Executive Committee of the Cornell Board of Trustees, will commence on January 1, 2025.

  • Bala’s appointment was announced by Interim President Michael Kotlikoff, noting her strong background in computing, diversity, and innovation.

 

  • She will take over from John Siliciano, who has been serving as interim provost since July 1, 2023, and previously held positions within Cornell’s Law School.

 

  • Under Bala’s leadership, Cornell Bowers CIS experienced notable growth, with a 30% increase in faculty and the development of a new 135,000-square-foot building, set to open in 2025.

 


Kavita Bala brings a wealth of experience and leadership to her new role as provost. She is widely recognized for her contributions to computer vision and graphics, as well as her commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in computing. 

 

Bala’s journey at Cornell began as a postdoctoral researcher in 1999, progressing to roles as assistant professor, department chair, and eventually, dean of Cornell Bowers CIS.

 

Bala has played a key role in establishing Cornell’s reputation in artificial intelligence and technology. As lead dean of the Cornell AI Initiative, she facilitated numerous projects, including the NewYork-Presbyterian–Cornell Cardiovascular AI Initiative and the launch of academic minors in AI and AI in Society. 

 

Her efforts have also led to a higher representation of women and underrepresented groups within the college, with women now making up 44% of the student body—more than double the national average.

 

Under her guidance, the college received a major donation to name the Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science.
