Hindus & Black Leaders Unite in Atlanta: A Powerful Celebration of History & Solidarity

Atlanta, GA – In a remarkable display of unity, the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) hosted its second annual "Building Bridges: Connecting Communities" event at the Georgia State Capitol on February 28, 2025, to honor Black History Month.

The gathering brought together over 40 lawmakers and community leaders to celebrate the deep historical ties between the Black and Hindu communities, emphasizing shared struggles, resilience, and civic engagement.

The event featured prominent African American leaders, including Senator Nikki Merritt, Senator Emanuel Jones, and Senator Nan Orrock, alongside Senator Shawn Still and State Representative Todd Jones, reflecting bipartisan support for strengthening inter-community relations. Senator Orrock, who witnessed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legendary "I Have a Dream" speech, highlighted the ongoing need for representation and justice.

"This is more than just an annual event—it’s a lasting partnership built on respect and shared values," said Rajeev Menon, CoHNA's vice president. Pravin Patel reinforced the importance of meaningful cultural ties, while Sagar Patel, an 11th-grade Hindu American student, gave a heartfelt speech on youth-driven advocacy, earning admiration from attendees.

A key highlight was the Darshana Exhibit, an educational showcase that explored Hindu contributions to society, underscoring the rich cultural exchange between the Hindu and Black communities. Young members from Hindu Yuva played an active role in making the event a success.

Historically, figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. King inspired each other’s movements, shaping the fight for justice and civil rights. Even in the 20th century, Indian immigrants in South Africa and the U.S. stood alongside Black activists against racial oppression. This event reaffirmed that the bond between Hindu Americans and Black Americans is not just history—it’s the foundation for a stronger, united future.

"I appreciate CoHNA’s commitment to bridging communities—that’s what this event is about," said Senator Jones.

As Black History Month continues to inspire conversations on diversity and inclusion, CoHNA’s initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration. From Atlanta to the broader South Asian diaspora in the U.S., events like these remind us that unity is key to progress.
