Fill This Form if Hurricane Beryl Damaged Your Home: Lower Your Property Taxes Now

Written on 07/20/2024

Houston, TX - Homeowners in Harris County affected by Hurricane Beryl can now apply to lower their property tax bills. The Harris Central Appraisal District (HCAD) announced that those who suffered physical property damage are eligible for a temporary disaster exemption.

Key Details:

  • HCAD values over 1.9 million parcels in the Houston area.
  • Hurricane Beryl and the May derecho disrupted this year's valuation season.
  • Homeowners can reduce their 2024 property taxes through the disaster exemption.

Chief Appraiser Roland Altinger emphasized that state law allows for property reevaluation due to physical damage, potentially lowering the total taxes owed.

"This year has seen significant natural disasters, including flooding, the May derecho, and Hurricane Beryl. Homeowners can use the disaster exemption to lessen their tax burden," Altinger said.

Eligibility and Application:

  • Damage must be physical (e.g., structural damage from fallen trees, but not damage to trees or shrubbery alone).
  • Eligible properties include homes, buildings, certain mobile homes, and personal property used for income production.
  • The property must be at least 15% damaged in a governor-declared disaster area.
  • Applications must be filed by Monday, October 21, within 105 days of the disaster declaration.

To apply, visit HCAD's website, go to the "forms" section, and complete form 50-312. Send the completed form to Harris Central Appraisal District, Information and Assistance Division, P.O. Box 922012, Houston, Texas 77292-2012.

This temporary disaster exemption offers much-needed relief to Houston homeowners impacted by recent natural disasters. By taking advantage of this opportunity, affected property owners can reduce their financial burden as they recover from the damages caused by Hurricane Beryl and the earlier derecho.
