The Department of Homeland Security has responded to the growing importance of artificial intelligence by forming the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board. Comprised of 22 executives spanning technology, critical infrastructure, civil rights, academia, and policymaking domains, this board is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI integration in the nation's infrastructure.

 

The board, featuring six notable members of South Asian origin, will advise on AI integration in critical infrastructure. These are:

 

  1. Rumman Chowdhury, Ph.D., CEO, Humane Intelligence
  2. Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO, IBM
  3. Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft
  4. Shantanu Narayen, Chair and CEO, Adobe
  5. Sundar Pichai, CEO, Alphabet
  6. Arati Prabhakar, Ph.D., Assistant to the President for Science and Technology; Director, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy

 

Board's Objective:

 

  • Advise the Secretary of Homeland Security: Provide guidance on the integration and utilization of AI in critical infrastructure to ensure safety and security.

 

  • Support critical infrastructure stakeholders and private sector entities: Offer recommendations that help in the responsible use of AI technologies and in preparing for potential AI-related disruptions.

 

  • Inform the general public: Raise awareness about the safe integration of AI technologies and their potential impacts on national security, public health, and safety.

 

  • Respond to emerging threats: Address the vulnerabilities highlighted in the DHS Homeland Threat Assessment of 2024, including threats from adversarial nation-states using AI technologies for cyber-attacks.

 

  • Diverse sector representation: Include insights from software and hardware companies, civil rights organizations, public officials, and academia to provide a holistic view of AI safety and security needs.
