The number of Indian students coming to the United States for their studies has been on the rise. With this increase, there's also been more news about these students, unfortunately including some reports of tragic or violent incidents.
Recently, a concerning case has surfaced at San Jose State University. A second-year graduate student named Amogh Upadhya is facing arson charges. He was linked to two fires that occurred at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library on the university campus. The first fire broke out on March 31 and the second on April 8.
Authorities, including Cal Fire, the university police, and the State Fire Marshal's Arson and Bomb Unit, conducted a thorough investigation. They reviewed surveillance footage and followed up on various leads, which led to Upadhya’s arrest on April 12.
Despite Upadhya's strong academic background in robotics and machine learning and his ambitions to build a career in software engineering, his motives for allegedly starting the fires are still unknown. His LinkedIn profile highlights his academic achievements and career goals.
Currently, Upadhya is being held in custody with bail set at $400,000. He faces four counts of arson, and his initial court hearing took place on April 12. This incident has raised significant concerns about campus safety and security.
