San Jose, CA, October 24, 2024: A local family and doctors are calling for extra safety measures during Diwali after a firework accident last year left 13-year-old Rhea Ramdoss severely burned.

The incident occurred while Rhea was holding sparklers during the Festival of Light, and a spark ignited her skirt, resulting in a nine-week recovery at Valley Medical Center’s burn unit.

Burn specialists warn that Diwali often sees more severe burn cases than other holidays, including the Fourth of July.

Dr. Clifford Sheckter, director of the burn unit, noted past tragedies, such as a woman who died from extensive burns caused by her saree catching fire.

The Ramdoss family hopes their story encourages others to be cautious, especially around traditional garments like sarees, which can be highly flammable.

Rhea has since made a full recovery and returned to her usual activities, including playing tennis.

Her mother, Gina, stressed the importance of having safety measures like water nearby during celebrations to prevent similar accidents.
