Ohio, USA – Governor Mike DeWine has officially signed a historic bill into law, recognizing Diwali as a state holiday in Ohio. This monumental step acknowledges the cultural significance of the festival of lights and highlights the contributions of the growing Indian American community in the state.

Introduced by Senator Niraj Antani, the first Indian American elected to the Ohio Senate, the legislation ensures that Hindu students and families can celebrate Diwali without missing school or work. The bill gained bipartisan support, marking a significant step toward cultural inclusivity and recognition.

“This law not only honors the Indian American community but celebrates the diversity that strengthens Ohio,” said Senator Antani.

With the law set to impact schools and workplaces, Ohio joins a small group of states giving official recognition to Diwali. The move is expected to foster greater understanding and appreciation of Indian traditions, encouraging other states to follow suit.
