New Haven, Connecticut: Yale University announced the appointment of Kaivan Munshi, an eminent figure in economic development, as the Frederick W. Beinecke Professor of Economics in June 2024.

With decades of research into how community networks shape development in emerging economies, Munshi brings a wealth of expertise and insight to the university’s Department of Economics.

Over his 30-year career, Munshi has delved into the dynamics of informal community institutions, particularly in India, revealing how networks built around social units like caste impact employment and credit access.

At Yale since 2019, he has expanded his research to include inter-ethnic interactions and evolutionary economic factors.

One of his notable studies explores how social status affects workforce participation among different castes in India, providing critical insights into gender labor dynamics.

His work has also examined the links between nutrition, economic status, and health risks, bridging economics with evolutionary biology.

“Understanding the complex web of community networks is essential for advancing equitable development in emerging economies,” Munshi said, underscoring the vital role of social factors in shaping economic outcomes.

Munshi’s contributions to economic thought are internationally recognized, evidenced by his numerous publications in leading journals and awards like the 2016 Infosys Prize in Social Sciences.

His work at Yale is expected to inspire new avenues of research in social and economic development.
