Indian-American Golfer Akshay Bhatia Takes the Lead on PGA Tour

Written on 06/29/2024

Detroit, MI – June 28, 2024: At just 22, Akshay Bhatia is making waves on the PGA Tour. The Indian-American golfer shot an impressive 8-under 64 at Detroit Golf Club, taking the lead at the Rocket Mortgage Championship.

Bhatia, already a two-time PGA Tour winner, including the Valero Texas Open this season, had a stellar finish with birdie-eagle-birdie in his last three holes. Reflecting on his performance, Bhatia said,

“It’s always nice to finish like that. This tournament’s a birdie-fest, so birdies and eagles help a lot.”

He highlighted his strong putting and iron play while acknowledging some work needed on his driver and 3-wood. Despite some recent ups and downs, Bhatia has been performing consistently well over the last few weeks.

One of the day's highlights was his chip-in for eagle from 83 feet on the 17th hole, followed by a closing birdie. This fantastic finish sets him apart at the tournament.

Other notable performances include England’s Aaron Rai, tied for fourth with a 66, and defending champion Rickie Fowler, who also shot 66. Taylor Montgomery and Michael Kim trail just one stroke behind Bhatia.

Born in Northridge, Los Angeles, Bhatia credits his parents, Sonny and Renu, for his success. He began playing golf at a very young age and turned professional in 2019. His sister, Rhea Bhatia, is also a professional golfer. Bhatia currently resides in North Carolina.
