Seattle, WA  — A Gujarati film centered on a gay relationship is a step closer to an Oscar nomination. Directed by Vadodara-based filmmaker Rohit Prajapati, Katla Curry will be screened at the prestigious Tasveer Film Festival, a South Asian film showcase in the US, next month. If it wins an award, it could be nominated for the Oscars.

Key Facts:

  • Katla Curry is the second Gujarati film to depict a homosexual relationship.

  • The film was shot with a minimal crew of just 10 members.

  • If Katla Curry wins at the Tasveer Film Festival, it will be eligible for an Oscar nomination.

The 110-minute long film follows the love story of Rimal, a fisherman, and Ratan, a young man whom he rescues from drowning. Their bond grows as Ratan, despite being a vegetarian, learns to make Katla Curry, a fish dish, for Rimal. However, societal pressures lead Rimal to marry a woman, creating a dramatic shift in the storyline.

Katla Curry has already been showcased at a film festival in Mumbai and gained attention for its unique narrative and portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes in Gujarat. Prajapati, the film's 31-year-old director, hopes the film can secure support from production houses and the government for a theatrical release and streaming on OTT platforms.

Running a theatre group called 'Geet Theatre' in Vadodara, Prajapati is optimistic about the future of his film. “I’m hopeful that Katla Curry will make it to the Oscars,” he stated, looking forward to its growing success.

With its debut at the Tasveer Film Festival, Katla Curry stands a chance to make history as one of the few Gujarati films to gain international recognition for its portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships.
