Tacoma, WA: In a landmark move, Washington State has officially recognized Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays, becoming the first in the U.S. to do so.

Governor Bob Ferguson signed Senate Bill 5106 into law on April 9, 2025, at the Islamic Center of Tacoma, marking a significant step toward inclusivity and acknowledgment of the state's Muslim population.

Senator Yasmin Trudeau, the first Muslim elected to the Washington Legislature, highlighted the bill's broader implications:

"This is a simple bill, but by lifting up our Muslim community and our state’s commitment to religious liberty... Washington is a richer and more vibrant place."

Representative Osman Salahuddin, the first and only Muslim member of the state House, added, "This legislation is about more than just a date on the calendar. It’s about fostering respect, visibility, and inclusion for a community that has too often been overlooked."

This recognition comes amid reports indicating that over 82% of Muslims in Washington have experienced Islamophobia in the past year, underscoring the bill's significance in promoting inclusivity and respect for religious diversity.
