Shabana Azmi Inspires Indian Diaspora to Champion Child Rights

New York— In a heartfelt appeal to the Indian American community, legendary actress and social activist Shabana Azmi urged support for grassroots child rights initiatives during CRY America's 2025 Gala series. Held across six U.S. cities this spring, these events raised $1.4 million to fund programs aiding underprivileged children in India and the U.S.

The events combined purpose with festivity, featuring cocktail hours, live entertainment, donor appreciation, Bollywood music, and dancing. An online auction showcased Indian artwork, designer outfits, and jewelry, further engaging attendees. 

 

Azmi emphasized the moral responsibility to support organizations like CRY that work at the grassroots level, stating, "It is our duty as a society to support organizations like CRY that work at the grassroots with projects that make transformative changes in the lives of children." 

CRY's project partner, Lalithamma, shared inspiring stories from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. She highlighted Kalpana, a girl who transitioned from selling vegetables to becoming an engineer, and Mahesh, who moved from farm labor to employment at a national bank, thanks to CRY-supported initiatives. 

With the support of over 35,000 donors and 2,000 volunteers, CRY America has impacted the lives of more than 825,000 children across 5,000 villages and slums through 111 projects in India and the U.S.
