Washington, D.C.: Ajit Pai, former Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has been appointed as the new President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CTIA, the leading wireless industry association in the United States.
Pai will officially assume his role on April 1, 2025, succeeding Meredith Attwell Baker, who announced her retirement in December after serving as CEO since 2014.
Key Facts:
- Ajit Pai will begin his tenure as CTIA's CEO on April 1, 2025.
- Pai replaces Meredith Attwell Baker, a former FCC commissioner who led CTIA for over a decade.
- Prior to this appointment, Pai was a partner at Searchlight Capital Partners, a global private investment firm.
Ajit Pai's journey to CTIA's leadership is marked by a distinguished career in telecommunications policy.
As FCC Chairman from 2017 to 2021, he spearheaded significant initiatives, including the historic C-band spectrum auction in 2020, which raised a record $80 billion and made available 280 MHz of mid-band spectrum for licensed wireless carriers.
Industry experts have lauded CTIA's selection of Pai. Chetan Sharma, an industry analyst, remarked, "He is the perfect candidate for the job at this moment. The primary task of CTIA is spectrum and industry advocacy. He has been the most effective [FCC] chair in my opinion."
Roger Entner, founder of Recon Analytics, echoed this sentiment, stating, "Pai is great for this position as he knows all the players in the industry—CTIA, NTIA, and the White House. Even when people disagree with him, they like him as a person, which goes a long way."
In his new role, Pai will face several challenges, notably advocating for more spectrum allocation to the commercial wireless sector.
The industry has long eyed the lower 3 GHz band, currently held by the Department of Defense, for commercial use—a goal that has remained elusive.
Additionally, CTIA has traditionally favored full-power, singly licensed spectrum over dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS), a stance that may need reevaluation as spectrum sharing gains traction.
The Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) need to restore its auction authority permanently and the debate surrounding SpaceX's plan to share the upper C-band for satellite use add further complexities to Pai's agenda.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new position, Pai tweeted a quote by Nikola Tesla and said, "The wireless future is here. And the best is yet to come."
Nikola Tesla, 1926: "When wireless is perfectly applied[, . . . ] we shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this, but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to… pic.twitter.com/BLWiWR3fjY
